Learn A New Skill

Job searching can become a repetitive task and if it’s been a while you’ve been looking for job vacancies, I suggest you to learn a new skill. Learning a new skill whilst out of employment keeps your mind active and it’s something productive. When you learn a new skill whilst your looking for a job, it goes to show that you are capable of doing things beyond your nature. When employers see a gap between your last job they will always question it and if your job search has been longer than 5 months continuous, they know your damaged goods. But if it’s been that long and your still finding a job, learn something new. It doesn’t really need to be a brand new skill, it could be an extension to what you already know.

Take IT for example, the IT field is huge and there are many new skills to be learned. So if your a systems administrator and it’s been a while since you’ve been out of work, learn web designing or a programming language. This will be beneficial to you in the long run, think of it as time invested. Learning a new skills doesn’t need to be costly, in-fact you can self teach yourself a new skill. The internet is a huge resource with so much information widely available there really is no need for training courses to learn new skills. A friend of mine is a professional web designer and he’s been looking for work for sometime now, his skills were the same as 3 years ago, so I told him to learn something new. He went ahead and start doing research about internet marketing, he didn’t fully learn the whole trade but knew quite a lot about it. So when he finally did get a interview to work for a media company, his knowledge about internet marketing became useful and it’s the reason that he actually got the job.

Knowledge is power and knowing more than you are capable of is an advantage to you over your competitor. So it’s very wise to learn something new now and then, don’t let your skills age, instead update them. Learn something new today and add it to your CV.
