Desktop Support Jobs in London

Finding Desktop Support Roles

With over 3 million desktops in London, desktop support roles are constantly in demand. Finding a desktop support role in London is quite competitive, you need to be unique and have very good communication skills. In London majority of desktop support roles require Windows XP experience. I would recommend you to study a MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician) course. It’s only 2 exams and covers Windows XP inside out, from basic networking to troubleshooting settings. The MCDST certification is a must have for all desktop support technicians. Many have self learn them selves, but if you’re the sort of who likes to be guided then I would recommend you to study it first hand. There are an average of 42 people after every desktop support role. So what makes you stand out?

Well, your first point of standing out should be your CV. You should have a well written CV which outlines all the relevant skills for the desktop support job role you apply for. E.g. if a job role has Windows XP written all over it you should be outlining Windows XP on your CV as your main strength. If a desktop support role requires intermediate Windows 2003 server Active directory knowledge then you should mention Windows 2003 server on your CV, but not too much. Getting the skills balance right on your CV is the key to finding a desktop support role. Also you might want to expand your knowledge of other desktop support applications such as Microsoft Office. Become an expert in a particular field and master it completely. You must remember to keep your desktop support skills up to date at all times.

Not many businesses are using Windows Vista yet because of compatibility and user problems. But moving forward just like everything, every business will have moved onto Windows Vista over the next 4 years. I’ve actually seen companies still use Windows NT and when I spoke to the IT Manager of one firm he said the boss said he was happy with the infrastructure and everything works just fine. Some companies are still using old OS’s because they simply don’t need to grow in business size or expand.

You would be very lucky to find an in-house desktop support role within a small company. Most commonly they are found in bigger corporations or IT outsourcing companies.
